IC-81 Mathematical Basis of Life Assurance
IC-81 Mathematical Basis of Life Assurance is a 40-credit compulsory paper on the Fellowship route, and it is the mathematical foundation the rest of the life actuarial syllabus stands on.
What the paper is actually for
Every life insurance premium rests on two things: an estimate of when money will be paid out, and an estimate of what money is worth over time. IC-81 formalises both. Once you can express a benefit as a present value weighted by probability, life insurance pricing stops being mysterious.
That also means this paper is unforgiving of gaps. The concepts stack, and a shaky grip on an early chapter shows up three chapters later.
What the paper deals with
- Mortality and life tables — how survival and death probabilities are expressed and used.
- Compound interest and present value — the time-value machinery.
- Annuities — valuing a stream of payments contingent on survival.
- Assurance benefits — valuing a payment contingent on death.
- Premium calculation — net and office premiums, and what sits between them.
- Reserves — why they exist and how they are computed.
- Bonus and surplus — how participating business distributes results.

The topics that repay study
Life table fluency comes first. Everything else uses it. Time spent here is never wasted.
Learn the notation properly and early. Actuarial notation is compact and unforgiving; candidates who treat it as decoration struggle throughout.
Understand the gap between net and office premium. It is conceptually simple, frequently examined, and easy marks once grasped.
Reserves reward understanding over formula recall. Be able to say what a reserve represents before worrying about how to compute one.
How to prepare
Work every example with a pen. There is no substitute — mathematical fluency is built by doing, and no amount of reading substitutes. Practise with the calculator you will carry into the exam.
IC-81 underpins IC-92 Actuarial Aspects of Product Development, so studying them in that order saves effort.
A note on practice availability: Certena currently serves 25 verified IC-81 questions — enough to check your understanding, not enough to be your main revision. We only serve questions whose answer keys we have checked against a source, so a small bank means we have been cautious, not that the subject is small. Use the textbook worked examples as your primary drill and our questions as a spot-check.
