12 Common Mistakes to Avoid in III & IC-38 Online Exams

Most candidates who fall short in III and IC-38 online exams don't fail because the material is impossible — they fail on avoidable mistakes. The good news: once you know the traps, they're easy to sidestep. Here are the 12 most common mistakes, and exactly how to avoid each.

During preparation

1. Only reading, never practising. Passive reading builds familiarity, not exam skill. These are MCQ exams — practise MCQs. See why active recall beats re-reading.

2. Cramming everything at the end. Insurance papers are definition-heavy; a single late binge won't hold. Space your study over weeks and revise little and often.

3. Ignoring weak areas. It feels good to re-do topics you're already strong in. It doesn't move your score. Track what you get wrong and drill exactly that.

4. Skipping full-length mocks. If your first timed, full-length attempt is on exam day, you'll be caught out by the pace. Simulate the real thing beforehand.

5. No target date or plan. "I'll study when I can" rarely clears a paper. Work backward from your exam date to a weekly target — a study plan makes this automatic.

On exam day

6. Misreading the question. The single biggest in-exam error. Watch for "NOT," "EXCEPT," "always," "never" — these flip the answer. Read the full stem before looking at options.

7. Falling for look-alike options. Insurance MCQs love near-identical terms (cover note vs policy, nomination vs assignment). Eliminate the clearly wrong options first, then choose between what's left.

8. Spending too long on one question. A hard question is worth the same as an easy one. If you're stuck, flag it and move on — come back with time to spare. More on managing your time.

9. Leaving questions blank when there's no negative marking. If the exam doesn't penalise wrong answers, never leave a blank — an educated guess can only help. (Confirm the marking scheme for your paper first.)

10. Second-guessing every answer. Constantly changing answers usually lowers scores. Change only when you have a clear reason, not a vague doubt.

11. Poor pacing. Racing and finishing with 30 minutes unused — or crawling and running out of time — both cost marks. Know roughly how many seconds per question you have and check the clock at the halfway mark.

12. Panicking at a hard patch. A run of tough questions early can rattle you into rushing the rest. Expect some hard ones, flag them, and keep your rhythm — the easy marks later are still there.
