Build an III Study Plan That Gets You to Exam Day

Most people who fail an insurance exam did not fail because they were incapable — they failed because they had no plan, ran out of time, and walked in under-prepared on half the syllabus. Certena's Study Plan exists to prevent exactly that. Here is how to use it.

Why a plan beats willpower

"I'll study whenever I get time" almost never works when you also have a job. A plan converts a vague intention into a small, specific task for today. Certena builds that plan for you from three things: your certification level, your exam date, and what you have already practised. If you are juggling prep with work, pair this with our guide to preparing for the III exam while working full time.

Step 1: Pick your path and see the roadmap

Once you have chosen your level and stream, open the Study Plan (the /plan screen). Certena lays out a roadmap of the papers you need, compulsory first, then the optionals that close your credit gap fastest. Each step shows roughly how much work it needs based on the question bank.

Step 2: Set your target exam date

Enter the date you intend to sit the exam. The plan immediately calculates a pace — how many questions per week you need to average to be ready in time — and shows it on your Home screen too. If the date is aggressive, it tells you honestly; if you are ahead, it says so. This is the difference between "I hope I'm on track" and "I know I'm on track." For a worked example, see our 30-day study plan for the III exam.

Step 3 (Pro): Customise to the papers you actually enrolled for

Real candidates rarely register for every paper at once. With Customize my plan (a Pro feature), you can select only the subjects you have enrolled for and give each its own exam date. The roadmap then plans around exactly those papers, and your pace tracks the nearest deadline. This turns a generic roadmap into your real schedule. Not sure which optionals to take? See choosing optional subjects for Associateship and Fellowship.

Step 4: Let weak areas steer each session

As you practise, the plan and your Home screen surface your weak areas — the subjects below the pass mark. The whole point of a good plan is that you are never guessing what to study; you open the app and it tells you. Spend your limited hours where they move the needle most.

Step 5: Keep the streak, trust the pace

Certena tracks your streak and nudges you with plan reminders as your date approaches. You do not need to re-plan constantly — just show up, clear the day's work, and let the pace do the accounting. Combine it with the study habits that actually work for exam prep.

In short

A study plan is not extra work — it is the thing that makes the rest of your work count. Set your date, follow the roadmap, and let Certena keep score.
